Hello!
I would like to become the only Dacia Sport owner in the UK.
Sadly, my attempts to find a car have been utterly unsuccessful. Even going to Romania and trying to ask around didn't work, probably mostly due to my appalling grasp of the language.
I was wondering if you might be able to offer any advice, or know of anyone who can help? Ideally I'd like to find a late long-door model in good enough condition to drive back to the UK. But if this isn't possible, I have a car transporter and am more than happy to travel anywhere in Europe.
The car will be beautifully restored and very well looked after. It'll also achieve fame in the UK's best-selling oldtimer magazine - I write for them.
Any help will be very gratefully received.

Welcome Dacia Sport Club forum. I am glad to see an interes for Dacia Sport in United Kingdom.
It is hard to find a Dacia Sport in good and original condition. The best are here.

What would I have to do to make it legal to drive in Romania? And does anyone know if I have to apply for export plates - or similar - to drive a Romanian car back to England?

To drive legally in Romania, the car needs verification technique (ITP) and accident insurance (RCA). An insurance containing a green card, so the car can be driving across Europe. A Dacia Sport insurance costs ~50E for 6 months.

I see. How can an ITP be obtained? Presumably it involves some sort of vehicle inspection?

Normally the car must have valid ITP at the time of sale but is not a rule.
ITP means "periodical technical inspection".
ITP is obtained after an inspection and it costs ~ 30E if the car is OK.

Good stuff. Sadly, the owner of the blue car in Buzau seems to be uncontactable.
Adrian: I'm hoping to spend no more than around €1000 - preferably less. Originality is my main priority. I'm more than happy to carry out restoration work, and a shabby original car is vastly preferably to one that's been badly patched up in the past.
Of course, you're proof that a modified car can be restored to fantastic, original condition. But this process would be more difficult in the UK, where spare parts are not available.
The story of driving the Dacia home will be featured in the UK's best-selling classic car magazine. A glow-in-the-dark green car with alloy wheels and a huge spoiler would not go down well with the readership!
